Numerous Canadian films have addressed the trauma of immigrating to this country, but few have been as emotionally devastating as Anthony Shim’s moving Riceboy Sleeps. After losing her husband, So-Young relocates to Canada in the 1990s with their young son in tow. At school Dong-Hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates. At work So-Young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate their individual circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows.
The screening will begin with a trailer for Such a Vivid Imagination, a new locally produced feature film.
Riceboy Sleeps will be followed by Q&A with local production designers Louisa Birkin (Such a Vivid Imagination) and Jenny Bowers (Rice Boy Sleeps) on their visions for their respective films.
